Ben has been enthralled by music his entire life, both on stage and as an enthusiastic audience member. Throughout elementary school, high school, and university, he’s taken many chances to participate in concert band, various musicals, and choir. He first became BEN AM (/bɛn eh-em/), however, in 2019, when he started composing his own music on his phone, experimenting with everything that GarageBand had to offer.
His influences include favourites such as Sade, Brent Faiyaz, Frank Ocean, John Mayer, and Daniel Caesar, as well as the talented friends he’s surrounded himself with who push him to grow and work to keep making the music that he’s passionate about. He deeply values collaboration with local musicians and friends, and hopes to keep collaborating with talent all over.
Somewhat resistant to labeling himself with a specific genre, BEN AM blends r&b, jazz, rap, soul, hip-hop, and rock. His live debut was a feature on Sask Music’s Black History Month spotlight series, and he’s incredibly grateful for every opportunity he’s had to hone his skills since then. Following that, he's taken the stage at The Cure, O'Hanlon's Pub, Bushwakker Brewpub, and many more. Look for BEN AM on instagram @ft.ben.am!
